900 tonnellate di amianto verso l’India
L’odissea della Clemenceau non è bastata al governo indiano. Dopo che Greenpeace e le pressioni internazionali avevano convinto il presidente Chirac a far tornare verso la Francia la nave carica di amianto, ci si aspettava una tregua. Invece un’altra nave, questa volta norvegese, chiamata Blue Lady e carica di 900 tonnellate di amianto e metalli pesanti, si sta dirigendo verso le coste di Alang, una delle basi principali dello shipbreaking, la pratica di rottamare le vecchie navi cariche di sostanze chimiche pericolose, di amianto e di metalli pesanti.
Lo segnala Greenpeace, che ha dichiarato che il governo di Nuova Delhi si sta disinteressando dei destini della nave e sta seguendo una politica puramente di profitto per il sito di Alang, dove le navi vengono demolite senza le necessarie precauzioni, con un grave danno per la salute dei lavoratori e per l’ambiente. Secondo l’associazione ambientalista migliaia di lavoratori sono morti negli ultimi vent’anni in paesi come India, Cina e Pakistan a causa di incidenti o per l’esposizione a materiali tossici conseguenti alle pratiche di smantellamento delle navi.
