USA: i rischi ambientali delle etnie urbane
Che le popolazioni di colore degli USA vivessero spesso situazioni sociali ed economiche svantaggiate è risaputo, ma uno studio di Associated Press su un progetto dell’EPA (l’ente per la protezione ambientale USA) ha evidenziato una realtà ancora più grave: rispetto ai bianchi, i cittadini neri americani hanno il 79% in più di probabilità di ritrovarsi a vivere in aree ad alto rischio ambientale. Il motivo è chiaramente nelle condizioni economiche di queste e di altre etnie, e nasce dalla concentrazione di aree industrializzate in prossimità delle periferie cittadine.
Lo studio di AP evidenzia come, a dispetto delle leggi emanate durante la presidenza Clinton, i cittadini americani non siano ugualmente tutelati nei confronti dei rischi ambientali, palesando così una sproporzione fra i ceti sociali bassi e quelli medio-alti. Inoltre, per quanto i neri rappresentino in questo senso la maggioranza a livello nazionale, anche i cittadini ispanici e asiatici sono particolarmente soggetti, in alcune zone degli USA, a tali rischi. Lo studio, i cui risultati sono consultabili on-line e tramite un CD-ROM distribuito dall’EPA, ha evidenziato anche come l’inquinamento delle diverse aree influsice sulla salute e, sulle spese sanitarie dei ceti meno abbienti.
